SECTION VIII
SHIPMENT, LIMITED STORAGE, AND DEMOLITION TO PREVENT ENEMY USE
8-1. SHIPMENT AND LIMITED STORAGE.
To prepare the AN/ASM-61 for shipment and storage:
a.
Place the cables in the transit case.
b.
Close the transit case cover and secure it with the latches.
c.
8-2. DEMOLITION OF MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE.
The demolition procedures will be used to prevent the enemy from using or salvaging this equipment. Demolition of
the equipment will be accomplished only upon the order of the commander. The tactical situation and time available will
determine the method to be used when destruction of equipment is ordered. In most cases, it is preferable to demolish
completely some portions of the equipment rather than partially destroy all the equipment units.
a. Smash. Use sledges, axes, hammers, and similar tools to smash the interior units of the gyro magnetic
compass test set, connectors, meters, and knobs.
b.
Cut. Use axes, machetes, and similar tools to cut wiring, cording, and cabling.
Warning: Be extremely careful with explosives and incendiary devices. Use these items only when the need
is urgent.
c. Burn. Burn the technical manuals first. Burn as much of the equipment as is flammable; use gasoline, oil,
flame throwers, and similar materials. Pour gasoline on the cut cables and internal wiring and ignite it. Use a flame
thrower to burn spare parts or pour gasoline on the spares and ignite them. Use incendiary grenades to complete the
destruction of the unit.
d. Explode. Use explosives to complete demolition or to cause maximum damage, before burning, when time
does not permit complete demolition by other means. Powder charges, fragmentation grenades, or incendiary grenades
may be used. Incendiary grenades usually are most effective if destruction of small parts and wiring is desired.
e. Dispose. Bury or scatter destroyed parts or throw them into nearby waterways. This is particularly important if a
number of parts have not been completely destroyed.
