EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
EQUIPMENT PURPOSE, CAPABILITIES, AND FEATURES
1-6. The compass set is used in fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft to provide an accurate heading in one of
two modes of operation. These two modes are MAG mode (magnetic) and DG mode (free gyro). In the MAG
mode, the system is referenced to the Magnetic North Pole; in the DG mode, the system is referenced to
the True North Pole.
The compass set consists of a gyro, fluxgate, and a flux compensator.
LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS
1-7. The compass set is located in the cockpit and wing or body area of the aircraft. It is usable at any
latitude and at any elevation up to 50,000 feet. Each component of the compass system is described as
